Cartoon Caption Contest

I do have to say, it was a very hard decision to pick a winner as there were some great captions.  To refresh your memory, I drew a rough cartoon sketch, and had Blog and Facebook friends suggest funny captions.

The winner gets a cartoon ready to frame, once I redraw my final version with their caption.  Here is the cartoon:

And the winner is…….

Karen Griska from The Selvage Blog!!!  Her winning caption was very quirky, just like my humor:  “Fired from her job as a one-armed paper-hanger, Mary gives rotary cutting a try.”   Well done, Karen!!

I confess to laughing when I read that one!  I even ran it by my local quilt store owner- who has an even quirkier sense of humor than I do.  He laughed, too!  He did edit Karen’s winning caption by taking off the “wall” before the “paper-hanger” as it does flow better.

Karen, will contact you for your address.  I may even have a little fun when I redraw the cartoon and personalize it for you.  🙂

Fabric Stash Cartoon

Here’s a new cartoon dedicated to all those quilters with a large FABRIC stash:

Ok, I admit to having a slightly warped sense of humor.  My inspiration for this one comes from my friend, Barb, who is selling off part of her fabric stash.  This got me thinking about my own fabric stash and how we often will  refer to it as our  “stash.”

Next thing you know, my mind wandered to the downside of a non-quilter overhearing this conversation.  Viola!  This cartoon was born!

Happy Quilting!  Carla Barrett

Mail Call!

In today’s mail, I received several issues of Machine Quilting Unlimited :

This is a shameless plug for a terrific quilting magazine which carries my cartoon, Feathered Fibers. I always get several copies since I’m a regular contributer (Thanks, Vicki!)

This magazine is for all home quilters, so no matter what size machine you quilt on, this publication is for you. There are interesting profiles, reviews, how-to articles and of course, my cartoon.

This issue’s cartoon is autobiographical- it actually happened to me and I lost a few hundred dollars worth of thread. In case you are curious what I am talking about, let’s just say there is a really good reason to have a pet free quilt studio!! LOL

Speaking of pets, here’s an older cartoon that was inspired by one of my kitties. While this never actually happened to me, one of my cats did go under my table. Bad kitty!!

Remember when Vicki Welsh won my blog milestone contest in May? She was kind enough to wait to receive her prize so that I could enter it in the local county fair. Her prize ended up winning a 1st place and this is what she won:

Vicki, watch for a Fed-ex delivery… your purse is finally on its way!! Hugs, Carla

Cartoon Published in a New Magazine

I am pleased to announce that my cartoon will be published into it’s first publication! It will be in a brand new quilting magazine by Meander Publishing, LLC called Machine Quilting Unlimited. Meander Publishing is also the publishing company that puts out a popular stand up machine quilting magazine as well. The premiere issue will be coming out before the end of the year! Get your subscription today.

I have not been posting my newer cartoons on my blog because I want to keep the material fresh, as well as marketable. Here’s a spare one slightly altered for this post- LOL:

In the meantime, I’ve now learned to draw my cartoon according to publishing specs and resolution requirements. If you are new to my cartoon, I draw directly onto my laptop screen using a stylus with Photoshop software. That is what works for me, though I am open to advice from any cartoonists that stumble onto this post.

Tomorrow, I’ll post more artwork/fiber or beading photos from my old blog. Come back for a visit! As always, I love to hear from you

Hugs, Carla
